3D Printer Filament

Do you have an FFF / FDM 3D Printer? Then you need filament! There are many options when it comes to 3D Printer filaments. There are many different types and colours. The most popular option is PLA. PLA is an easy-to-print material that is suitable for almost any 3D printer. It comes in almost all colors and in some cases also with special extras such as metal or carbon particles. When you want to order Filament, it is good to see what the print temperature is and whether you need a heated bed.

Different Types of 3D Printer Filament

There are many different types of 3D Printer filaments available. Each species has its own unique properties, advantages and disadvantages. Below we discuss the most common types of filament.

  1. PLA Filament: PLA filament is made from plant-based materials. This makes it biodegradable and has a low melting temperature. PLA is easy to print and produces little to no odor during printing. It is ideal for making decorative objects, toys, and prototypes.
  2. ABS Filament: ABS filament is a durable and strong material. It has a higher melting temperature than PLA and can therefore withstand high temperatures better. In addition, ABS has a higher mechanical load. However, ABS does produce a strong odor during printing. It is therefore nice if your 3D Printer is in a closed housing. ABS filament can only be printed on printers with a heated bed.
  3. PETG Filament: PETG filament is a material with a high impact resistance and is very durable. It is slightly flexible and is less brittle than materials such as PLA and ABS. In addition, it is more transparent than other materials. This is ideal if you want to print a translucent object. PETG is ideal if you want to make prints such as lampshades.
  4. TPU Filament: TPU filament is a flexible material that is ideal for making rubbery objects. You can make things like phone cases, tires and toys with it. TPU has a low hardness and produces no odor during printing.
  5. PLA+: PLA+ is a variant of the popular PLA Filament. The main difference is that PLA+ is reinforced with additional polymers. This makes it stronger and more durable. It has the easy printing properties of PLA. However, it is less brittle and can withstand higher temperatures. PLA+ often has a higher gloss level than standard PLA. The print temperature of PLA+ is higher than that of standard PLA.

Which type of 3D Printer filament is most suitable?

3D Printing is a very versatile technology. It has countless applications in various industries. These sectors often have different needs for the properties of the 3D prints. Below are some examples of applications with associated filaments:
  1. Education: 3D printers are increasingly being used in education as a learning tool. Students learn about technology, design and production. PLA will mainly be used in education. But ABS and PETG are also certainly suitable.
  2. Prototyping & production: 3D printers are often used for prototyping and production of parts and components. Associated filaments include ABS, PLA, PETG, Nylon and TPU.
  3. Medical applications: 3D printers are used in the medical industry to create custom prostheses, implants, hearing aids and dental models. A commonly used type of filament is TPU.
  4. Architecture and Construction: 3D printers can be used to make models and prototypes of architectural designs and buildings. Associated filaments include PLA, ABS and PETG.
  5. Fashion and Jewelry: 3D printers can be used to make fashion accessories and jewelry. Associated filaments include PLA, Nylon, TPU and wood composite filament.
