What is a relay?
A relay is a switch that opens or closes switching contacts using an electromagnet. The relay is a frequently used component in digital circuits and can switch a much larger voltage with a relatively small voltage. A relay has two major components: the coil and the switch.
How does a relay work?
The most important part of the relay is the coil. This creates an electromagnetic field when voltage is applied to it. This turns the relay into a switch. The electromagnetic causes the iron core in the coil to become magnetic, causing it to pull the metal armature towards itself. This anchor then connects to one of the contacts. The moment the voltage is removed again, the armature returns to the initial contact.
