The Sharp IR distance sensor is a top choice for many projects that require accurate distance measurements. This sensor is an economical alternative to sonar rangefinders. It performs much better than other IR options. Connecting to microcontrollers is easy. You connect the single analog output to an analog-to-digital converter. This is how you measure distances. Or you connect it to a comparator for threshold detection. The range is between approximately 10 cm and 80 cm. A graph shows the relationship between distance and output voltage.

The GP2Y0A21 uses a 3-pin JST connector. You connect this with our 3-pin JST cable for Sharp distance sensors (not included). You can also solder three wires directly to the sensor. Viewed from the back, the three connections are from left to right: power, ground, and the output signal.
