Description NeoPixel Ring - 12x 5050 RGB LED with Drivers
This is a NeoPixel ring from Adafruit. It contains 12 ultra bright RGB NeoPixels arranged in a circle. The ring has an outer diameter of 37mm. The rings are connectable. Connect the output pin of one to the input pin of another. You only need one microcontroller pin to control as many rings as you can pair to one.
Each LED is addressable because the driver chip is contained within the LED itself. They each have ~18A constant-current driving, making the color very consistent. Even when the tension varies. You don't need external choke resistors, making the design slim. Power the whole thing with 5VDC and you're ready to go.
A single data line is used with a very timing specific protocol. Since the protocol is timing sensitive, you need a realtime microcontroller. Examples include Arduino, AVR, PIC, mbed, Raspberry Pi. It cannot be used with a Linux-based microcomputer or interpreted microcontroller such as the NetDuino. Adafruit has a NeoPixel library for Arduino which makes it easy to use. An 8MHz or faster processor is required. On the Adafruit's site are tutorials with wiring available.
