A HAT (Hardware Attached on Top) is an expansion board for the Raspberry Pi . You click it directly onto the GPIO pins. This allows you to expand your Pi with additional hardware, such as motor controllers, GPS, touchscreen displays or audio outputs. Thanks to its fixed size and an EEPROM chip, your Pi knows which HAT is connected. The correct settings are loaded automatically. This makes installation simple and user-friendly. A HAT is the same size as the Pi and covers it completely. The mounting holes ensure firm attachment.
A pHAT (partial HAT) is a smaller version of the HAT. It is intended for compact projects. It works especially well with the Pi Zero or Pi Zero W. Despite its smaller size, a pHAT offers powerful features, such as small displays, DACs or sensors. The EEPROM chip is missing, but otherwise it works just as easily. pHATs are ideal when space is limited or you are looking for a lightweight solution. Many pHATs are open-source and designed by hobbyists. This allows for many creative applications.
Raspberry Pi also makes its own HATs. They are 100% compatible and reliable. They are known for their quality and good support. Think of the Sense HAT with sensors for temperature, humidity, pressure and movement. Or the PoE HAT, which supplies power via ethernet. These HATs work perfectly with the Raspberry Pi software. They are often used in education and professional projects.
Whether you're building a weather station, creating a smart speaker, or controlling a robot, you can get more out of your Raspberry Pi with a HAT or pHAT.
