The Raspberry Pi 4B is the latest model of the foundation.
Also this version has the same format as its predecessors.
You can therefore easily place it in your current projects as an upgrade.
The softwareRaspbian) is backwards compatible. This means that what you make on a Pi 4 Model B will also work on an older model like the Raspberry Pi 3B+.
The Pi CPU has received a major upgrade. It is now a 64bit quad core with Cortex A72 cores, and has a clock speed of 1.5GHz.
The performance of this would therefore have tripled.
This is compared to the Cortex A53 quad core of the Raspberry Pi 3B+.
4K Display connection
The Raspberry Pi 4B comes with 2 Micro HDMI connectors.
This is a nice improvement over the standard HDMI port on its predecessor.
The Micro-HDMI port is a lot smaller than a normal HDMI port. 2 Micro HDMI ports therefore do not take up much more space. It is true that these Micro-HDMI ports no longer fit the Pi 4B into the housing of the previous models.
There is just enough space between the gates to connect 2 cables.
If you want to connect a standard HDMI cable you can do it with a Micro HDMI to HDMI adapter.
However, it is so wide that one of the gates is no longer accessible.
If you want to use 2 monitors at once, you will have to use a Micro-HDMI cable.
The new pi is able to have 2 monitors working at a resolution of 4K at a time.
To be used as a desktop computer
The speed and performance of the Raspberry Pi 4B have improved considerably.
It is now possible for the first time to use the Pi as a desktop.
You can edit documents and spreadsheets, browse the internet, play media, and more.
The Raspberry Pi 4B will not be able to replace a €1000 computer. However, the Pi 4B is certainly powerful enough to carry out most of the work. And that from €39,95!
With normal use, you will notice that the Pi 4B works fine and smoothly.
Cool your Pi!
Currently there are 2 major problems regarding the Raspberry 4 Model B.
First, the Pi becomes relatively warm, secondly, the original housing has poor ventilation.
This cools the pi badly.
Fortunately, these problems can be solved.
With the following 3 things, you can promote the cooling of your Raspberry Pi.
- A fan
- Past heatsinks onto the processors
- A heat sink housing or housing with fan
The combination of heat sinks with a fan will cool the Pi best.
If you haven't connected cooling on your Raspberry Pi, and you're working normally, you'll probably soon get one of the two notifications that are in the picture right here.
If you ignore these warnings, it is possible that the Pi will shut itself down.

The first Pi with 2 or even 4GB RAM
Never before has it been possible to choose for yourself how much RAM you want.
Just like the previous models, a 1GB RAM version is available.
But it is now also possible to opt for a 2GB or 4GB RAM version.
That's 4X as much RAM as before!
Connections
The Raspberry Pi 4B comes with Gigabit Ethernet.
But also with onboard wireless networks such as WiFi and Bluetooth.
This allows you to get rid of the Pi almost anywhere in the house or in the office.
The Pi 4B also comes with 2X USB 3.0 & 2X USB 2.0 ports. For example, you can connect a keyboard and mouse to these USB ports.
As with the 3B +, there are 40GPIO pins.
GPIO stands for General Purpose Input / Output. This means that the Pin does not have a specific function. Normally Pins have a specific purpose such as sending a signal or receiving a signal. A GPIO Pin is customizable and can be controlled by software.
The 2-lane MIPI DSI display, 2-lane MIPI CSI camera and the 4-pole audio port are still in the same spot.
Power supply
The Raspberry Pi 4B uses a USB-C port for the first time.
This USB-C port is used for the power supply of the board.
Because the Pi is much more powerful than its previous models, it needs more power.
At least 3A to be exact. This is 0.5A more than with the 3B +.
The Pi can be fed in 3 ways:
- 5V DC - 3A via USB-C port
- 5V DC - 3A via gpio header
- PoE (Power over Ethernet) - Requires a separate PoE HAT
Necessities to start
If you've worked with the Raspberry Pi before, you're probably used to using all the accessories of your old Pi with a new model. Unfortunately, this is not quite the case with the Raspberry Pi 4B.
