What is a servo?

A servomotor is a name used for a specific type of linear or rotary drive. A servo is actually more of a mechanism than a motor and is able to keep the same speed/acceleration and position continuously. The motors use a rotary encoder and a controller with which it creates a feedback system.

How does a servo motor work?

Do you want to use a servo motor but don't know how? In our project Arduino Introduction: Servo Control we tell you everything from connecting to programming servo motors!

What is a stepper?

A stepper is a brushless, synchronous electric motor, with which you can easily control the angular rotation. This can be done, for example, in steps of 1,8 or 0,9 degrees. The rotating part (rotor) consists of permanent magnets and the stator consists of electromagnets (coils).

How does a stepper motor work?

Do you want to control a stepper motor to later make a machine, a robot or even a 3D printer? In our short project for beginners Arduino Project: Stepper motor speed controller we teach you the first steps to control a stepper.

What is the difference between servo motors and stepper motors?

Servo motors are often compared to stepper motors because they can both be programmed to follow certain grades. One of the main differences is the position control loupe. A servo motor uses a closed-loupe position control and the stepper motor (usually) uses an open-loupe position control. As a result, the accuracy of the position with a servo motor is limited. However, the servo motor is often a more cost-effective solution. Due to the lack of coils and magnets, a servo motor would be a cheaper option, but not suitable for all applications.
