Raspberry Pi Pico

De Raspberry Pi foundation comes with a new product! The Raspberry Pi Pico. This is the first microcontroller board of Raspberry Pi foundation. In this article we tell you everything you need to know about the Raspberry Pi Peak.

Raspberry Pi Foundation releases Pi Pico module with its own 133MHz chip

De Raspberry Pi Foundation has released a new module. This module contains a self-designed microcontroller for the first time. The Pi Pico uses the RP2040, a microcontroller with two ARM Cortex-M0+ cores. The module costs only € 6,95. (ORDER HERE)

It is the first time that the foundation behind the Raspberry Pi made its own microcontroller. According to the foundation, the module with RP2040 is not only cheap, but also supports many external devices. It is also a relatively powerful device. The RP2040's two cores have a clock speed of 133MHz and an on-chip memory of 264 kilobytes. The chip also supports up to 16MB of flash program memory. In terms of clock speed, it can board compete with other microcontrollers such as the ESP8266.

The Pi Pico board itself is a module without headers. It has thirty GPIO pins, four of which can be used as analog input. It also has 2MB of flash memory. The controller has a power supply that accepts 1,8 to 5,5V voltage. Allowing the device to be controlled with two or three switched AA cells. The board also has a DMA controller, two UARTs, two SPI controllers and 16 PWM channels.

On the board is also a micro-USB1.1 connection that can serve as host and device. And it is possible to upload software via USB with a physical button on the module. Other electronics manufacturers have also developed modules based on the RP2040. Including Adafruit, Arduino, Pimeroni and Sparkfun. In principle, the Pi Pico is for sale immediately, although not all suppliers already have the device.

The difference between a Raspberry Pi and the Pi Pico

The standard Raspberry Pi boards take care of heavy calculations, network access and storage. However, the Pico microcontroller provides analog input and low-latency I/O processing. The microcontroller also has a very energy-efficient standby mode.

Since it is a small device, the specifications are also miniscule. The RP2040 consists of a dual-core Arm Cortex-M0 + running at 133MHz, 26 kilobytes of RAM on the chip. And support for up to 16MB of off-chip Flash memory through a dedicated QSPI bus.

Buy a Pi Pico?

For now, the Pi Pico is not for sale yet. At most you can order it as a pre-order. Probably the Pi Pico will be available at most stores within a few weeks of launch.

Because the Pi Pico is offered for only € 4,50, this is of course a great fun to give as a gift.

Arduino Nano RP2040

Arduino has released the Arduino Nano RP2040. This is the latest addition to the Arduino Nano family. Just like the Pi Pico, the board is based on the RP2040 chip. This new board will have various sensors such as a 9-axis IMU and a microphone.
